Paternity Testing for Newborns: A Practical Guide
Published January 19, 2026 · Medically reviewed by the partner laboratory's medical director, AABB-accredited relationship-testing laboratory
Yes, you can DNA-test a newborn from birth. A soft buccal swab against the inside of the baby's cheek is painless, non-invasive, and returns the same 99.99%+ accuracy as an adult sample. Best time to swab: 30 minutes after a feeding, when the baby is calm.
Is it safe?
Completely. The swab is a soft foam or Dacron tip on a plastic stick — think of a very small, very gentle toothbrush. There is no risk to the baby. Cheek swabbing is used in hospital NICUs for genetic screening.

How to swab a newborn
Wait at least 30 minutes after a feeding to avoid milk residue. Gently open the baby's mouth with a clean finger, insert the swab, and rub in a circular motion against the inside of the cheek for 30 seconds. If the baby closes their mouth mid-swab, that's fine — resume when they open again.
Timing considerations
Some parents test in the first days at the hospital; others wait a few weeks. There is no biological reason to wait. The DNA does not change.
